Advancing Campus Sustainability with Energy Efficiency Measures Across the College of ACES
The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is implementing a $36.38 million project to modernize building infrastructure and improve energy performance across approximately 850,000 square feet of facilities within the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES). The project is being delivered through Facilities & Services Energy Performance Contracting (EPC) program, with Veregy serving as the competitively selected Energy Service Company (ESCO).
Planned improvements include lighting upgrades, greenhouse reglazing, building automation system enhancements, mechanical system upgrades, energy recovery, weatherization, and other energy conservation measures (ECMs). These improvements will modernize aging infrastructure, improve building performance and occupant comfort, reduce energy consumption, and generate more than $38.5 million in guaranteed energy savings over the life of the project.

ENERGY CONSERVATION MEASURES
Learn more about the improvements being implemented across the project facilities.

Air Handling Unit Energy Leak Repairs
Correcting air leakage at existing face-and-bypass dampers and replacing leaking steam control valves to improve air handling unit performance and reduce energy waste.

Air Rebalance
Adjusting building airflow to better align ventilation with space requirements while reducing unnecessary energy use.

Building Automation System (BAS) Upgrades
Upgrading building controls and programming to improve HVAC operation and energy efficiency.

Ductwork Sealing
Sealing leaks in existing ductwork to reduce conditioned-air loss and improve system performance.

Energy Recovery
Recovering energy from building exhaust air to reduce the energy required to condition incoming outdoor air.

Greenhouse Reglazing
Replacing existing greenhouse glazing with higher-performance materials to reduce heat loss and improve thermal performance.

Lighting
Upgrading existing lighting to high-efficiency LED technology and commissioning occupancy sensors to reduce unnecessary lighting during unoccupied periods.

Steam Pipe Insulation
Insulating exposed steam piping to reduce heat loss and improve system efficiency.

Steam Traps
Replacing failed or aging steam traps to reduce steam loss and improve heating system efficiency.

Unit Heater Steam Control Valves
Adding control valves to existing unit heaters to improve temperature control and reduce unnecessary heating.

Weatherization
Sealing gaps and air leaks in the building envelope to reduce uncontrolled outdoor air infiltration.
