The Village of Deerfield is moving forward with a significant step toward sustainability and long-term energy savings. Construction begins mid-October 2025 on a 574.6 kW-DC ground mount solar array at the Village’s Wastewater Treatment Plant. The project is expected to be completed by the end of December 2025.
This initiative advances the goals of Deerfield’s Climate Action Report, which sets ambitious objectives to reduce emissions by 45% by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. By securing all available state, federal, and utility incentives, the Village has offset more than 70% of the total project cost.
Once operational, the solar installation will:
- Generate more than 645,000 kWh of electricity annually, offsetting approximately 23% of the facility’s grid power use.
- Deliver more than $1.1 million in utility savings over the system’s lifetime.
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 275 metric tons of CO₂ annually—the equivalent of removing 61 gasoline-powered cars from the road for one year or the carbon capture of 320 acres of U.S. forests.
- Advance the goals of the Climate Action Report, which sets ambitious objectives to reduce emissions by 45% by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
“This project represents more than just cost savings; it reflects Deerfield’s responsibility to future generations,” said Deerfield Mayor Daniel C. Shapiro. “By investing in solar energy at our Wastewater Treatment Plant, we are improving air quality, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, and demonstrating our commitment to a healthier, more sustainable community.”
“Veregy is proud to partner with the Village of Deerfield to bring this important project to life,” said Danielle Melone, Senior Account Manager at Veregy. “Wastewater treatment plants are among the highest energy users in municipalities, and by deploying renewable solar power, Deerfield is leading by example—showing how communities can reduce costs while making a lasting impact on the environment.”
A Strong Step Toward a Sustainable Future
By combining cutting-edge solar technology with thoughtful financial planning, the Village of Deerfield is charting a path toward resilience and sustainability. Projects like this highlight how local governments can both protect taxpayer dollars and contribute to broader climate goals.
