Bob Smith is the Director of Sales for Veregy’s Central Region and brings more than 35 of experience in the energy services industry. A recognized leader in Energy Savings Performance Contracting (ESPC), Bob has helped shape the energy efficiency landscape across Illinois and the Midwest through his work with public agencies, utilities, and private-sector organizations.
Since joining Veregy in 2019, Bob has worked closely with K–12 school districts, higher education institutions, counties, and municipalities to develop energy optimization and infrastructure modernization strategies. He is known for his expertise in ESPC, IRA direct pay opportunities, clean energy technologies, geothermal systems, and performance measurement and verification.
Bob played a key role in helping establish the legislative framework that enabled ESPC procurement in Illinois and has founded and managed multiple successful Energy Service Companies throughout his career. His collaborative approach and deep understanding of public-sector energy projects make him a trusted advisor for organizations pursuing efficiency, resiliency, and decarbonization goals.

His deep familiarity with Illinois procurement law, including the ESPC enabling statutes he helped shepherd into passage, gives him a rare ability to guide clients from concept through contract execution with confidence. Bob works across community types and scales, from major metropolitan counties and regional airports to smaller municipalties, consistently helping public leaders unlock the capital trapped in energy waste and redirect it into lasting facility improvements. He also brings working knowledge of IRA direct pay provisions, actively helping clients model eligibility for geothermal, solar, storage, and EV charging to improve project economics within a guaranteed savings structure.
